This 8-hour class meets the statutory requirements established in C.R.S. § 18-12-202.5 and as revised by HB24-1174 to qualify for a concealed handgun permit (CHP) application in Colorado.
Instruction takes place in a traditional classroom and range environment with a live instructor and requires both a live fire shooting qualification and a written test.
Range activities will include engaging silhouette targets at 3, 5, 7, and 15 yards; drawing from a holster with concealment; one- & two-handed shooting; and emergency reloads.
Course topics and discussion will include: Knowledge and safe handling of firearms and ammunition, safe storage of firearms and child safety, safe firearms shooting fundamentals, federal and state laws pertaining to the lawful purchase, ownership, transportation, use, and possession of firearms, state law pertaining to the use of deadly force for self-defense, best practices to ensure CHP holders safely interact with law enforcement personnel who are responding to an emergency, and techniques for avoiding a criminal attack and how to manage a violent confrontation, including conflict resolution and judgmental use of lethal force.
Students will complete a live-fire, shooting qualification test as a part of the class as well as a written exam. Students must score at least 70% on the live fire qualification*** and 80% on the written exam in order to pass the course.

Participating students will need to bring:
• Comfortable clothing appropriate for indoor class and outdoor range activities
• Outer jacket (to be used as cover garment)
• Personal handgun in a case or bag AND with an appropriate belt & strong-side, OWB holster (Outside the Waistband)*
• At least three ammunition feeding devices capable of holding at least 5 rounds each
• 300+ rounds of factory new ammunition
• Eye & ear protection

** Holsters that break the 180-degree rule when drawing / re-holstering, that do not provide adequate trigger guard protection, that have an active trigger guard lock (eg. SERPA style), or that are otherwise deemed unsafe by an instructor will not be allowed.

The Northern Colorado Rod & Gun Club is a private, 14-acre outdoor gun range. The Club is located east of Highway 287 on Owl Canyon Road about 15 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

Coming from Fort Collins: Go North on US 287 toward Livermore. Turn right onto County Road 72 / Owl Canyon Road and go about a half-mile. The Club entrance will be on your right and identified by a road sign and white cattle guard gate. Drive through the gate and follow the road for about one mile. Then, take the left road at the 'Y' intersection toward the lower shooting ranges.
Coming from I-25: Take Exit #281 (Owl Canyon Road Exit), go west for 6.4 miles on Owl Canyon Road (Larimer County Road #70) until you reach the round-about intersection. At the round-about, take the first exit (going North) and continue on Owl Canyon Road ( now County Road #72) for an additional 4.4 miles. The Club entrance will be on your left and identified by a road sign and white cattle guard gate. Drive through the gate and follow the road for about one mile. Then, take the left road at the 'Y' intersection toward the lower shooting ranges.
